About
Hello, my name is Asako, Web Designer and Front-End Developer based in Vancouver, Canada.
I have been interested in creative activities and entertainment such as Japanese comics, animation and video games since I was in elementary school. I was especially enthusiastic about drawing comics, and in junior high and high school I belonged to the drawing club and created posters and leaflet covers for school events.
To develop my interests into practical skills, I took a BA (Hons) course in Graphic Design at the University for the Creative Arts in the United Kingdom. During the course I gained a wide range of skills including concept making, branding, typography, printmaking, bookbinding, and using design software. In 2010 my conceptual poster won an art competition entitled ‘No Women No Peace’ and was presented to the former foreign secretary. After graduation, I worked as an intern for This Is It collective, Deafness research UK and London Study Abroad Centre.
After moving to Japan, I worked as a web designer in Tokyo for 3 years. Having worked in a professional environment, I have increased my proficiency in Illustrator and Photoshop. One aspect of my work which I have particularly enjoyed is designing interactive web pages with animation effects, and that made me enthusiastic to learn coding.
I had an opportunity to speak to web designers working in Vancouver and felt what they do is something I want to do next. So I decided to move to Vancouver and take Technical Web Designer program at BCIT in Vancouver. It is a 6-month intensive course, and I have learned how to build websites from scratch, using skills of HTML, CSS (SASS), JS, jQuery, PHP and WordPress.
Now having gained both design and coding skills, I’m more confident, professional and feeling that my creativity has been expanded.
